CARES LogoC.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program Support Team

A warm welcome and thank you as a most valued member of the C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program Support Team! The commitment of your time and talents is so appreciated, as your efforts are essential to the success of the program, as well as the positive future of our fishes.

Each CARES society, school, or other organization will have a CARES Support Team, headed by a CARES Support Team Leader.

Your role as a CARES Support Team Member is

  1. to assist your fellow members in achieving the Purpose of the C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program, which is to encourage hobbyists worldwide to devote tank space to one or more species-at-risk, while forming an information network between aquarists, scientists, and conservationists;
  2. to assist your fellow members in carrying out the Objectives of the C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program, which are
    1. to bring AWARENESS to the critical situation of our fish in nature,
    2. to RECOGNIZE, ENCOURAGE, and offer SUPPORT to hobbyists who maintain species-at-risk,
    3. to SHARE data and experiences through notes, graphing, and manuscripts so that others may learn to maintain those identical, and similar species, and
    4. to PRESERVE species-at-risk for future generations;
  3. to ensure that species are identified accurately prior to acceptance into the program, tactfully and diplomatically researching the origin of the specimens when ambiguous;
  4. to keep accurate records of your CARES participants, their species at risk currently maintained, the registration of the offspring of your CARES participants by other CARES participants, and published articles written by your CARES participants on their registered species at risk. This is easily accomplished by using the CARES Member Data Sheet provided, and by electronic means;
  5. to promote long-term maintenance of registered CARES species at risk through public recognition by way of a posted listing in print and on the website, and an awarding of an annual seal of ultimate achievement for each year that the species is maintained. As described further under “Implementing the Program,” one seal is added to the CARES Certificate of Recognition for each year that the species is maintained; and
  6. to offer encouragement; and
  7. to provide recognition!

Keep it Easy and Enjoyable!
The C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program is designed to be easy and enjoyable! You may decide to start out with the basic elements, and grow from there. Therefore, a list of Basic Elements to get started is provided. As the purpose of C.A.R.E.S. is to encourage hobbyists to devote tank space to one or more species at risk, offering that species a future of hope, if you have done that, you have done well!

CARES Program Templates
Templates are provided to be used for photocopying each CARES item in quantity for handing out to your members, or for Support Team record keeping. Each template is titled with a color-code, providing you with the exact color and paper stock. These papers are easily and universally available at your local office supply store. For consistency and ease of applying the program, it will be helpful to use the designated color when photocopying each item. When your members see gold, they will immediately know that stack is the CARES Species at Risk List, or when they see purple, they will know it is the CARES Outline. It will make a great difference, rather than stacks of all-white sheets of paper!

Accurate Species Identification
The importance of accurate identification at the time of initial registration of a species at risk prior to their acceptance into the program is strongly emphasized. As a CARES Support Team Member, this may be your greatest responsibility. If necessary, please do ask for photographs of a questionable submission, along with as much background history as can be given. There are many experts behind CARES, and many others who can be reached out to for help with identification. It is important that participants remain focused on the CARES goal, rather than on amassing questionable species for numerous awards. Together, we can ensure that these species are accurately identified as conservation priority at risk, and the proper foundation of future CARES stock.

Visit us here often for CARES Updates!
Be certain that you and your members continue to visit your C.A.R.E.S. Preservation Program website regularly to make full use of the resources, updates, assistance, and benefits found here! We look forward to welcoming you into CARES and including your name, and that of your club, school, or store, on this site!

Together - Accomplishing the Goal
Let's make it our personal goal to find a home in the aquariums of hobbyists across the globe for every species that is on the C.A.R.E.S. Species at Risk List. Let’s make another goal to shorten the species at risk list through providing a brighter future for fishes at risk!

TFH Magazine
